Hello, I’m pleased to meet you!

Hi, and thankyou for taking the time to read this entry on the Pop Culture Cafe blog!

My name is Paul and I’m a long serving geek from the UK who loves video games, comics and movies, and I’ve been invited by the host of Pop Culture Cafe, John, to write a few posts every now and again.  This first post is really just to break me in and get to meet you all, next time I’ll be talking about some of the comics I’ve been reading, like the Spider Island or Infinity Gauntlet collections, or maybe about the pre-release demo builds of Destiny and Battlefield: Hardline I’ve been spending time with on the Playstation 4!

Whatever I come back with, I hope you’ll share with us the passion and enthusiasm for all the cool stuff that makes being a geek such a pleasure and make sure you listen to John’s Pop Culture Cafe Podcast for the latest news, or my own show, Big Kids Playground, for a relentless tornado of poor-taste humour and the best TV, movie and video game recommendations, available on iTunes, Spreaker.com, Tune In Radio and Stitcher!

Bye for now!

Sony Users can record Gameplay for Free

Sony keep making buying there system the overall better choice

Gamesoul

PS4What could be said as another win for Sony was revealed yesterday August 7 when the President of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, announced that a paid PSN account will not be required to use the systems gameplay recording features. The confirmation was publicized over Twitter  after Microsoft divulged that the Xbox One will in fact require an active online account for the same service.

As established in the past, the PS4 will continually record video game no more than 15 minutes into the past for a player to capture, edit, and share all on the system itself. This prompts another hit against the Xbox One as it will only be capable of recording up to 5 minutes into the past without prompt. Although this will most likely not be a defining feature for most consumers to place their purchases upon, it is undoubtedly a huge advantage in terms of press…

Day Z is Taking Sides in the Console War

Excellent story about the next gen consoles and what may turn the tied over to PS4

Another Castle

day z

According to a report by Edge-Online Dean Hall’s Day Z might not be able to play on the Xbox One. Day Z  planned to launch for the PC and both the PS4 and Xbox One, however the revelations surrounding the One’s harsh restrictions  may hold the game back from ever reaching the platform.

The particular restrictions called into question are the One’s fees for indie developers to delegate a patch to the game’s inevitable glitches, as well as Xbox One not allowing indie developers to self publish. Hall commented on these restrictions, “We’re happy to see  Day Z on any console but there is a… I guess one problem. The console needs to not charge for us to do updates and it needs to be indie title friendly.” Hall also went along to say that a patch could cost the small company close to ten or twenty thousand dollars per update!…

Playstation 4:The Five Year Plan

ImageIn a interview with EDGE Sony World Studios vice president Micheal Denny talks about the lessons learned from the difficult launch of the PS3.

He also talks about the PlayStation 4 origin. How Sony’s PS3 difficult launch would influence the launch of the PS4 and how the stakes are for the PS4 and Sony as a company.

Quoting from the interview:

“I think the starting point is you go back to when we launched PlayStation 3 and I think it’s fair to say that the landscape in terms of gaming has totally changed since those days. It’s so much more competitive but it’s so much more proliferated in terms of the amount of people who are gaming and the amount of devices they are gaming on. And in a way we have to see that as an opportunity. I think as we’ve said we’re going to be very focused on gamers and gaming and offer an experience that is differentiated, that is high-end, but in doing that we have to embrace where gaming’s gone. And that’s why we have to embrace lots of ideas such as integration, that we are integrating into many other areas of gamer’s lives, casual gamers and gaming-on-the-go as well.”

I have read that the new console will have a Blu-ray drive. But will the drive be on future models? More and more games are being available for download with special offers. In a article at Forbes, Shuhei Yoshida talks on how Sony plans to move more and more to the digital side. This is not good news for company’s like GameStop, EB Games and us the consumer that buy used games to save a few bucks. That being said will that not stop gamers from buying the new console? Nay.

PlayStation 4 release date 4Q of 2013(that be Christmas)
