Standing In Line For Todd McFarlane Autograph

Note: I had plan on releasing this as soon I returned home for the Calgary Expo. Well that was the plan but I got hit by the con bug and was out for few days. Well better late then never.

So it is day two of the Calgary Expo and my son and I got in to The Big Four building so he could get a hologram print, which he never bought.  So I thought WTF why not get in line to get a couple books signed. Todd was schedule to be signing  from 1pm to 7pm. Yeah that is a large amount of time set aside for signing.

Time was passing and the line, well the line I was in hardly moved. Now before you think I am bitching i am not. Todd was spending time with each person coming to get his autograph. It may only a few minutes but nevertheless he was taking the time to meet his fans.

I got Stan Lee autograph last year. The line was larger and his time was short but man they scuffled you through. It may have been because they were worried he may bite the dust at any minute. He didn’t folks.

Though some folks are annoyed I have not seen any leave. That is all because of the fact that it is Todd McFarlane and this maybe some folks only chance to see him. I am one of those few.

A big thanks to Todd for spending his time meeting his fans.

Oh I have no plan on selling my signed copies. They are for my personal viewing. Well until I die and then the books will go to my son or daughter.  After that??????

P.S. I waited 3 hrs to get these two books signed.  Worth it.

Arrow, Catching Up, and General-ness…

Hey Poppers,

I couldn’t think of a featured image, I just read what I wrote, the part down there, that you haven’t read yet, unless you skipped ahead, but I bet you didn’t, I trust you. Anyway, that picture of 3PO and R2 in a Tim Burton movie about bad dreams before Jesus’s birthday was the best I could come up with. So good luck, and enjoy, but mostly good luck. The Batman vs Superman trailer!!

Wow, I have been so busy lately I have not been able to blog, but here I am so let’s jump right in. I got Instagram, it’s okay. And I changed my name on twitter to batteryrunheart. Because my heart is literally run by a battery. No joke, I have a pacemaker, it’s one step down from an arc reactor. No big. Also I am now a registered apprentice, becoming a Parts Technician. It’s a three year program, but I have set myself up to have my ticket by next summer. And yes, apprentice like in Star Wars, again no big.

So, also I got my wife rather pregnant, so yeah. We can now move onto four person cosplays. Yes, that is where my mind immediately goes.

Also, Whovians, if you want an idea of how overwhelming it is to find out you will be a dad again, please see the below picture.

Next I got bit by a spider! And I think it may have been radioactive.

spider bite

And lastly I have been working on my third and last book in the Fantom Fury trilogy. (cause the “tri” in “trilogy” means three, so my third, and therefore…. last….. book) So, there you have it my excuses for not being able to blog. (Please see radio style segway below… Remember I mentioned my books like one second ago?)

Yes, I met CAITY LOTZ!!!!! at EEK fest. She was super nice and she is so gorgeous. It was awesome to be face to face with Miss Sara Lance. And yes, that is a copy of my first book signed by her. It was so cool. Also I met someone else ladies and gents, he’s on the Arrow, not a huge part of the show, but certainly notable. (Please refer to picture below.)

HA! Gotcha!! It’s Stephen Amell! and he’s the main character. Get it? It was a joke when I said that he wasn’t a huge part of the show. Cause he is! Get it? Anyway, yeah I totally met him in a bathroom. Dressed as the Arrow. It was the coolest thing ever. He was really nice and I told him he was a big fan. And at his panel I asked him if he was going to use his island wig to playing Casey Jones. If you don’t know of the island wig on Arrow, it’s worth a quick google search. If you don’t know who Casey Jones is why are you reading this, seriously all the references must be going over your head. Star Wars, and yes I made that Star Wars picture in paint, Arrow,  Doctor Who, Spiderman. I mean if you’ve made it this far and didn’t get at least eighty percent of the references I applaud you, seriously. Nice job dude. And yes I call guys and girls both dude. Just so you know I wasn’t leaving anyone out. Anyway, what was I going to say? Oh yeah, even if you get every reference and you are still reading, thank you. I just go, I literally type whatever is in my head, I’m hungry, and hit publish. And if you are willing to use your precious time reading that, well that, well it just warms my heart. Thanks guys! Anyway, as we all know it has been nerd overload lately. The Batman vs Superman trailer. Oh man! I am so stoked!!!!!! Seriously it has been playing on repeat in my head since I watched it. What else, Suicide Squad, Batman vs Superman, Deadpool, um what else, oh yeah, Batman vs Superman. X Men, Batman vs Superman is worth mentioning, Star Wars is coming up, that Batman vs Superman trailer was really good. Ant-Man will be out soon, maybe they’ll play that Batman vs Superman trailer during the pre-show. I saw Terminator which I loved. The Batman vs Superman trailer. Oh! Arrow started filming. BvS. Flash is gonna be on Season Two. Dawn of Justice. Legends of Tomorrow which looks so cool, and I love that they are using Rory to travel through time. I mean what a cool thing to do, and yes I called him Rory. Because to me that’s who he is. Rory, Amy, Doctor. I guess now it’s Rip, Nebula and Skynet. Sniffle. They grow up so fast!!! Yeah, so it has been an overload, which I can handle. I mean I got that spider bite and I have a one-step-down-from-an-arc-reactor-pacemaker. Sorry for any spoilers. And sorry I mentioned that trailer, (Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice) so many times, it’s just that, how can I put this,

Anyway, back to meeting Stephen and Caity, yeah, we’re on a first name basis, no big. They were so awesome and down to earth. No, noses in the air, no one was below them. They were both so nice, and so cool, and you know what? Whoever said don’t meet your heroes can go poop their pants!

Anyway, it’s been a slice, hit me up on IG and twitter, I follow back and I’m not quite as crazy, 140 characters and 1000 words, get it? cause a picture is worth a thousand words, and on Instagram you post pictures. Anyway, I’m allowed to make terrible jokes, I’m a dad. Puns, just for funs.

Bye bye

Oh yeah I couldn’t find a way to fit this in, but it’s so awesome so here:

K seriously bye.

Cons and Tees

Cons and T Shirts

J.W. Coughlan, I write novellas, I am a nerd, here we go:

Cons mean cosplay, full gear for the battlefield if you will.

T-Shirts are our training gear, leading up to the battle, leading up to the next con.

Correction: Khan

Let’s talk tees first:

Seriously five minutes per day, equals 5 out of 1440 minutes per day, 182500 minutes over a lifetime, that’s 126 days of my life I will spend picking out what T-Shirt I will wear that day. And I have a lot to choose from. Which of all the Harry Potters? Maybe an Avatar shirt, no way TMNT. Actually it’s cold out, I think I’ll wear Gambit, or The Hobbits, I haven’t worn Batman in a few days, oooo Wolverine is clean…ish. No, Spider-Man, I was defending Andrew Garfield yesterday right? Or X-Men, under a Batman hoodie, is that allowed? I know use the Spock hoodie. See how things get. And these are decisions being made BC: before coffee.

T-shirts are a funny business, my partner in crime get me the best tees online. They are always so cool. Especially when they get double shipped. Seriously, I have two Legend of Korra shirts, two Ravenclaw ones, and two of Prince Zuko riding a Charizard.

Basically what I’m saying is if you’re rocking the nerd life, the best way to support those fandoms is with a good ol’ fashioned t-shirt.

Let’s talk cosplay:

I love dressing up, always have, even as a kid I preferred Halloween over any other night. Batman was my specialty. And yes when I grew up I found myself a lady. We have been Gambit and Rogue, Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers, Flynn and Rapunzel. Then we made a little human being, and since then we have cosplayed Han, Leia and an Ewok. Green Arrow, Black Canary and Arsenal. I recently went to Calgary Expo, it was a blast, now I am here, gearing up for eek fest. Can’t Wait.

So in short, be proud of those fandoms, those stories that stick with you forever, cause that my friends, is a beautiful thing.

Calgary Expo 2015 Day 1

Today was the first of 4 days at this years 2015  Calgary Expo.  The show is a 4 day event starting on Thursday April 16 until Sunday April 19.  Each year the event gets bigger and better. A good indication that this years Expo is going to be big is that Thursday was well attended. Being a work day I thought it would be a little slow. Boy was I wrong. Taking in that Friday and Saturday will be the big days the showing for Thursday was great.

People were out and about in their cosplay outfits showing off some really cool stuff and of course the other showing off very little. Being a guy I did not mind.  Hopefully in the next couple of days I can post some pictures for you.

So got my first piece ordered. Getting some art. Chris Hardin artist that is currently working on Harley Quinn is doing a blank cover for me. It was a bit pricey but I am moving away from collecting just books but to the art. I am hoping to get some original art also.  You know the pages the artist us to draw on. I did over hear Chris saying that the companies are wanting more work done digitally. So if you are a collector you better start buying.

Over  all Day 1 was just looking around. Getting a feel for where everything is and what I want to get. Also how to find out where I can get the money.

Day 2 will be a little longer and a whole crap load to do.

Hope my feet hold out.

Calgary Expo Cosplay

Hey Poppers

So how have you all been? This past weekend I was down in Calgary for their annual comic and entertain expo. Once again the people running the show did a fantastic job of all the event run smoothly. Of course you can not have a Expo about pop culture with out people dressing up in some great and imaginative cosplay costumes.  Over this coming month I will be posting photos taken by my photographer, Doug Read. Doug took some great and I have to say interesting photos. So I hope you enjoy them.

Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo 2014

Hey Poppers

Well another year has come and gone and this years Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo 2014 was bigger, longer and packed with more media guest from TV and film. More artist, writers, creators from some of your favorite comics, web series and authors. Also a large group of independent comic book creators and artist. The venue also keeps expanding with a large tented area to hold more panels and events. Also there is a good chance you have to battle some weather conditions. This year a small snow storm. Hey that is spring in Alberta.  I spent the weekend walking the floor, seeing panels and talking to comic creators. Each year the amount of cosplayers continue to grow both with the amount of people coming out dressed up and creating amazing costumes. IMG_0801In the coming weeks I will be posting some the great work created by some really artistic people. Every aspect of the pop culture was represented at the show. Not only were your regular cosplayer making the rounds. Young and old came out to show their love for everything that revolves around the geek culture. IMG_0797Attending this year was three of the top cosplayer out there today. Lindsay Elyse, Monika Lee, Jessica Nigri. I got my picture with Monika Lee and I have to say is pleasant, fun and made everyone that came to see her feel very comfortable.

Among the media attending were Sean Astin(Lord of the Rings, Goonies, TMNT), Michael Beihn(Terminator, 24, The Rock), Bruce Campbell(Evil Dead, Burn Notice), Bill Paxton(Aliens, Agents of Shield, Big Love), Sigourney Weaver(Alien, Aliens, Avatar), Matt Smith(Doctor Who,Clone) and Karen Gillan(Doctor Who,Oculus,Guardians of the Galaxy. So many more to list but to find out more head over to my podcast, The Pop Culture Cafe’s Podcast.

From the world of comics J. Scott Campbell, Nick Bradshaw, Terry Dodson, Keven Eastman, Ray Fawkes, Mark McKenna. Again the show had many of the top name in comics both artists and writers. I had the pleasure of talking to Pat Shand from Zenescope Comics about the world of Grimm Fairy Tales and creating strong female leads. I had a great conversation with George Wassil about Oh Hell. George was excited about the world he help created and I am happy to help him spread the word. Go by and check out Kickstarter and help out if you love independent creators. Oh-Hell-1_CI had a small chat with Nick Bradshaw and what do two Canadian boys talk about first, not comics but the amount of snow each side of the country gets the most. Eh!

The Calgary Expo once again put on another great show. This is my 3rd year I have gone and the show gets bigger and better. Better organize and each day you can see how the people in charge make changes to make it run smoother. The volunteers deserve a great deal of thanks. These people spend long days making it pleasurable for us all. I did unfortunately see one poor girl getting harassed at our wait to get into the Doctor Who panel. I finally had to go over and tell the guy to leave her alone and if he wanted to complain go to the higher ups. That incident pissed me off. But overall the general public were great.

So much to see and do. That is the catch at such a big con, so much to see and no time to see it all. In my option that makes a great con. I took in the Greg Rucka panel that was such a great experience on writing not just for comics but anything at all. The Doctor Who panel was the high light of the whole con for me and the Corral was packed with some many coming to see their Doctor.

Finally two things that really made this years Calgary Expo really stand out. The first was talking to a guy from Calgary, I am from Edmonton and the two cities have a great and long rivalry. But for use it was just two guys that love the world of comics. The memories of our youth and the memories that were created because of that medium. The days of the old musky smell of the books. The simple joy of those books long ago and the chance to share that joy with someone like yourself, no matter where they come form.

The last and most important for me. I found a book that help create my love of comic books, Sci-Fi, and the world of fantasy. When I was a young fellow the book that I read again and again. That sparked my imagination, my love of art and my youthful dreams of living among the stars, Star-Lord by John Byrne, Terry Austin and Chris Claremont. I almost passed by this book. But I had to have it in what ever condition. I asked the seller if I could open it and take a look and he agreed. Opening the first page brought me back to happier times and smell of those old pages made my problems of my world disappear. Once again it was me and Star-Lord flying around the universe. Seeing that book again help me capture a very special and happier time for me.

So, Calgary Expo. Thank you. You help this old man feel like a young kid again.

Great show.

Calgary Expo 2013

It has been a week or so since my return form this years Calgary Expo and my mind is overload with trying to remember it all.So to the best of my ability I will try and tell you my experience at this years Calgary Expo.

Day 1

My band of merry nerds arrived for the opening day and from the start I could tell that the event organizes had learn a lot from last year. I also think that they also learn from the Edmonton show that they had  put on six months earlier. The parking for the event was already packed and we had a little walk to get your badges. The line up to get your badges moved along nicely from outside the door to the line up to get you wrist band. After getting our goody bag we finally made our way back out to where you would enter into the BMO hall ABC. The massive line up we had seen earlier to enter the hall was gone. Entering into the main area of the expo was easy and plenty of volunteers all knowing ahead of time what the plan was made things move smooth. Like my first visit to the show last year once I entered into halls ABC it was a feeling of excitement and where the hell do I go. I explained to my band of nerds earlier that I like to walk the floor the first day. See all the art and tables and booths to see what each one had to offer and make a plan of attack for the next day. So after walking the floor and seeing all we could see we called it a night and returned our hotel room for some much need rest and prepare the Day 2.

2013-04-26 14.09.122013-04-26 16.35.35Day 2

Day 2 was a little different then Day 1 only being that I had to wait in the very long line to get into the BMO. Once the doors open thou the line up moved along quickly and we were in a very short time. The only problem about the line up was that if you had plans to get in to see a panel or get a autograph or had a photo op planned you may have missed it. So the organizers of the Expo may wish to rethink this and move the time back on some of the beginning events to a little later. Saturday  was packed with more people. Well it felt that way to me. The area was filled with cosplay characters all being asked for photos and more than happy to agree to have their photo taken. X-23, Wolverine, Steampunk, Superman, Batman, Galactus, Ninja Turtles, Rogue, X-Men, Doctor Who and so many more that I saw and missed. There were a few tables selling the old gaming systems like Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Genesis game systems and the games they played were for sale a booths just selling them and others hoping to cash in the nostalgia.  Old gaming systems are a big hit with the older collector going back to play the game of their youth.  If you were only going to hope and get some  back issues of your favorite comic books well you may be a little disappointed. There were booths selling books but not that many and you had to be willing to spend some time going through the boxes. Some of the vendors did have they books in order but many you had to just find your way through them to get what you wanted. A couple of the vendor were more that willing and happy help you find what you were looking for. Luckily for me I was just looking for a few I needed.  I did get my autographs I wanted except for Nathan Fillion, man he was a popular dude. I tried 3 time to get his autograph but it time was packed.  Getting in to see a panel was much better organized also. The entrance to Corral now was enter only unlike last year were you entered and exited from the same spot. SO much easier. I was able to take in a panel or two. Overall Day 2 was great. No major problems compared to last year and getting out and back in was not problem at all.

2013-04-27 14.05.272013-04-26 13.59.58

Day 3

Holy crap standing in that line for Sundays show was f’n cold. If there had been a freak snow storm things would of gotten ugly. Getting ingain was easy and quick, once the doors were open. Sunday was the day to get your art, check out the independent artist and top comic artists that were attending the show. This year they had top notch artist attending. Adam Hughes, Adam Warren, Arthur Suydam, Alan Grant, Adi Granov, Erik Larsen, Neal Adams, Josh Adams and so many more. Oh I can not forget the man himself, Stan Lee. Publishers attending were, Avatar Press, Boom Studios/Kaboom, Rue Morgue, Topatoco, Aspen comics, Red 5 Comics, Top Cow and Zenescope. Now honestly I can not remember how many Publisher attended last years but as the show grow more and more should be attending. Maybe Marvel, DC or Valiant will make the trip up.  I got my Savage Dragon #1 signed by Erik Larsen which was way cool. I did notice that Erik Larsen has a very different way of holding his pen when inking that was strange to me. But I am not complaining about it just it is neat to see how can make magic with their hands.  I also got a nice Harley Quinn  picture signed by Neal Adams. Again the show was packed and it was good to see. I missed the Nathan Fillion panel and I was pissed to be honest. Early in the year the Calgary Expo was twiting  asking who they should get and I suggested Mr Fillion. So not getting his autograph or seeing his panel was the real big pisser for me.

So in conclusion and if you still reading this HOLY SHIT AND THANK YOU. The 2013 Calgary Expo was so much better organized then last year. Tickets sale were run better. The wrist bands was a great idea. Getting in and out of the BMO and other venues was so much better organized. Making the autograph are more open for people getting autographs and a are to get away from the crowd was a great idea. The eating area away from the main hall and autograph area was great also. Over all the organizers and volunteers and all  involved in these years Expo should be proud. Like any event not everyone was happy and things can be improved here and there. But the leaps and bounds made from 2012 were huge. The guest and media stars were great and the number of artists were awesome. My only disappointment, not getting to see Nathan Fillion and get his autograph. Yeah I know stop whining.

A side note I hope to post more cosplay later.
