I wasn’t sure I going to review this and then I thought “What the hell, it’s Friday, and this was a great episode”. For those of you who don’t know, I am originally from the Maritime on the east coast of Canada. Many of you may only know Pop culture and the Maritimes in one specific context……..The Trailer Park Boys. Now this is a fine , classy show, but there is one other icon of that particular geographical location that also has a rich history in TV and cinema. Her name is Anne……of Green Gables.
I’m not going to delve too much into the 107 year history of Anne of Green Gables which has included, first, world renowned and beloved books, and later much loved TV series and movies which made a star(In Canadian terms anyway) of Megan Follows.
This review will focus on the new Show which premiered last Sunday night called “Anne”. To me, it’s a re-imagining of “Anne of Green Gables”. Showing a much more realistic look at life in those days and how life as a child in an orphanage was sometimes very dark. The actress who plays Anne(played brilliantly by young actress Amybeth McNulty) brings both a sense of innocence and intense personal pain to the character .I realized 20 minutes in she was going to be one of the main reasons this show was going to be a success.
The brother and sister who Anne is placed with (through an unfortunate series of errors that turned out to be a blessing in disguise) are played by actors Geraldine James(Marilla Cuthbert) and R.H Thomson(Matthew Cuthbert). These decorated actors of screen and stage(R.H Thomson received the Governor Generals Performing Arts Award for Lifetime artistic Achievement in 2015)played these characters wonderfully.
Matthew Cuthbert, the soft spoken , quiet, wise farmer within minutes endears you (My wife said the character reminded her of her dad, which is high praise in of itself)and brings a strong sense of warmth and country living to the show. Marilla Cuthbert is the stern head of the household who has no time for sentiment but I think sees a bit of Anne in herself and slowly begins to see the potential of the child if someone will simply care for her.
I suppose I am a bit biased on this show. The scenery and cinematography showcases Prince Edward Island beautifully even though due to cost logistics a bulk of the show was in fact shot in Ontario. HOWEVER, much of footage of the coastline and of Anne and Matthews horse buggy ride is in fact P.E.I. Some things you cannot replicate. If a continued success, I suspect this will be a boon for P.E.I tourism.
I’ll be watching the second episode to see where this story goes next. It airs Sundays on the CBC. Starts May 12th on NETFLIX.Trailer Below.
Last night, I watched what was probably the best episode of Arrow since Deathstroke killed Oliver Queens mother. I’d go so far as to say it was the best acting job I had seen Steven Amell ever do and he and Josh Segerra(Prometheus)really created some of the most intense scenes I had ever seen on the show.
I had never seen Josh Segerra act anywhere other than Arrow but with each episode he more and more defines and crafts this character so well that he’s pushing with each episode into being the 2nd best villain to be featured in the series(Not sure if anything could top Deathstroke).
Obviously if you have not seen this weeks episode there are spoilers contained within.
The real one is dropping this Saturday. This is to only tease you. Are you teased yet? I actually find these more annoying than teasing but it’s content so here we go.
1rst one shows some decent shots of Aquaman with trident in hand. He looks every bit the part of Aquaman. I say he LOOKS the part. I haven’t heard him really channel any dialogue just yet
The 2nd one is Batman taking center stage and has some pretty good shots too. The first one has kind of a “300” look to it and the other is of the Batmobile in a retreating stance, guns blazing(That was worth your 20 seconds right there).
And there you have it
This trailer , I think, was actually done better then the first two. The first two were well done, but seemed much more action orientated where this one slowed it down a bit and delved into Wonder Woman’s origin story and alluded more to who she really is and the bloodline she has running through her veins.
At a few points during the trailer I even felt it had a bit of a Gladiator vibe to it which didn’t hurt it. As she introduced herself at the 2 minute mark, I even saw a sly “homage” to Maximus Decimus Meridius and his famous introduction to villain Commodus in Gladiator.
I hope Chris Pines character in this movie is not that of a “sidekick cuck” but we’ll see. It certainly seems that way so far. Hopefully they flesh(see the trailer) his character out a bit more .
Movie is out June 2nd ,2017
This one seems more personal. Jack Sparrow may have pissed off the wrong guy this time around. I like that. Also seems they are going a bit darker which I also approve of. Seems to be a more focused conflict then the last time around.
I didn’t see Keira Knightley or Orlando Bloom in the trailer so guessing they are not in this one. It does state that is the “beginning of an adventure” so this may be a two parter. Great to see Geoffery Rush back either way. I’ll probably regret saying this but as of right now I’m looking forward to seeing this.
Opens Memorial May 29th
I remember the first time I saw the trailer for “Cowboys vs Aliens” and thought it looked ambitious and very good……and then it came out. I kind of got the same vibe from this trailer. I’m sure Gangsters and Goblins looks unique on paper, but this is not a series…..this is a movie. That’s not a lot of time to reconcile those two worlds in the minds of many Netflix watchers.
I had forgotten how good Will Smith can act in Sci fi until I had watched Suicide Squad a while ago. If anyone can pull this off, it’s probably him. The creatures in that trailer look a lot like orc’s but that could rub lovers of the LOTR trilogy the wrong with if they are presented second rate.
The southern twang music was a nice touch, as opposed to a heavy drum beat “Hood” scenery usually has. This movie had a $90 million dollar budget and I bet a good chuck of that was Will Smiths salary. Max Landis wrote this and he’s got some serious geek cred so we’ll see how it goes.
Film Streams December 2017
Bah, you had to go there didn’t you?!?……. I suppose I should back up.
After the second trailer introduced the fact that Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman, Tom Hiddleston , John. C. Reilly and Brie Larson would all be sharing the screen my interest in this film rose greatly. This was going to be a hip Kong movie and some great dialogue. It was going to be funny and much better then I thought it was going to be.
This third and final trailer put me in the same spot as the first one did. Monkey see, Monkey do , monkey tell the story for you. Unless I’m missing some HUGE plot twist, I pretty much have seen Kong do everything I expected that he would do. They should have delved more into the backgrounds and interaction between the supporting characters instead of showing shot after shot of “Kong destroy”……that’s why I see it on the big screen. For that CGI.
In the vein of CGI action, I spotted what to me has become a cardinal sin in CGI action. Completely re-hashed scene from another movie …….except it’s from another King Kong movie!!!!!.Don’t believe me? Go to 2:03 – 2:05 of the below trailer. Then go to the trailer below that and go to 2:34……eerily alike. They are basically going to re- create the awesome classic T-Rex/King Kong scene they did in King Kong 2005.
I did enjoy the “music” created for this new trailer using guns being loaded. Creative, but not enough to cover the flaws for the trailer. Seeing WAY too much monkey
I’ll probably still end up going to see it in the theatre but the shines off this rose for now.
Movie is out Mar.10th in North America
