The Walking Dead – Finale Teaser

Well, tonight is the night.” All out War begins” .Rick and his merry band of zombie fighters have had just about all the shit they are willing to take off Negan and have decided to go to war over it. My biggest concern with the plan is why, oh why did they decide to do it on the same night as Wrestlemania!?!…..or at least bring the Undertaker to do the heavy lifting?!?

This season has taken a bit of grief in the press for being too violent. Others have said it has been too much of a soap opera. Working too much on inner personal relationships in the end of days instead of fighting zombies every episode. I think some people have been turned off by that fact that humans have begun to adjust to a world of zombies and as such we’re going to start meeting more people who aren’t trying to kill our little travelling troupe. This , of course, has made for more characters on the show which has irked some people. Ah well, can’t please everyone.

I’ve enjoyed this season so far. It’s been a well crafted story(for the most part. Looking at you garbage heap people) and has stayed true mostly to the nature of the comic. I’ve always liked that this show has been character driven, and did not strictly depend on gore for its drama factor. Somebody will probably die in this season finale and it will bother us because the show took the time to create and flesh out characters that we care about. That’s not a soap opera, that’s simply good story telling.

Few clips to hold you over until the finale.

Walking Dead back this Sunday

c38wnzswcaat2ww

Very much looking forward to this premiere Sunday night(Feb.12th). Just in time for Valentines day. I actually enjoyed the first half of the season quite a bit and offered hugs and shoulders to cry on for the more sensitive among us who thought that scenes with a baseball wielding maniac were turn out as anything other than what they were.

Oh, and fuck the PMRC.

This next half of the season I think will give folks a little more to cheer about. I’ve read more than one story that states that the story of Negan will be a little shorter than in the comics which might make a bit more sense as the TV series may not have the shelf life that the comic series does.

Some tidbits of clips below to wet your whistle(not a real thing)until Sunday rolls around. Cheers

Well, Well, This is a disappointment.(Lifts symbolic bat).It appears some people got upset at the season premiere of The Walking Dead this year. Did you read the comics? Did you hear through the grapevine what happened? Did you think they were going to water down the most iconic scene in the history of the comic? No…Then what the fuck did you think was going to happen?(points bat).

That feeling of upset snowflakes caused the show runners to make some changes….to tone it to fuck down(shakes head). It must have a taken a whole bunch of white…. precious little snowflakes to get their attention.(smiles)

Gale Hurd wanted to confirm that the show” is not torture porn”. It’s not Gale. It’s really not. However, there was a sense that Negan was this hip bad ass that everyone was supposed to like…..and I don’t think they do anymore. No, No, sir I do not think they do at all. They now have a strong sense of respect, fear and caution with Negan that they did not have before. There are fucking rules…..and they need to follow those rules….

Lucille is an instrument of fear. She is a lesson teacher. She is the law. If you cannot handle the punishment for not following those rules then you should just continue to melt snowflake. I am fucking embarrassed that the show runners CHOSE to tuck tail on this issue(taps bat to ground)…..yes I am.

Thanks Variety for this fucking story….you followed the rules.

‘The Walking Dead’ Producers Toned Down Violence After Season Premiere Backlash

Walking Dead Promo images for back end of the season.

Check them out….. I legitimately think sometimes their production meetings consist of “Let just fuck with them , and see how it plays out”

These comes from an interesting article on Vanity Fair where the author tries to dissect exactly what these images may mean in the bigger picture.

Hey Poppers

I fellow I know thru the guys at Big Kids Playground,Dougie (aka Scruffy Doug) wrote a little piece about his thoughts on being a geek. So take sometime here and have a read. I am sure you know what he is talking about.

If you are reading this, there is a fair chance that, like me, you are a Geek. We are Geeks. We are happy to be Geeks. We are proud to be Geeks. And most importantly, we don’t deny that we are Geeks. The world however, still seems surprised at this.
Despite the current global success of the Batman, X-Men, and Avengers franchises, the public opinion of being a comic book fan is still a negative one, with the term “geek” often used as a put-down. Admitting that you are a grown man who reads comic books or who plays video games can still get the same reaction as saying that you keep all your toenail clippings in a jar in the kitchen. Watching the mind-numbing, pointless, fly-on-the-wall garbage that is Big Brother, X-Factor, Jersey Shore, The Kardashians etc is somehow accepted as being normal, yet reading a graphic novel with well written plots and interesting characters is deemed weird. And as such, we geeks are deemed weird.
So, are we weird? Are we saddo’s with no lives? Are we some sort of underclass that look and act differently to the general public? Do we all fit the standardised “geek” image? Well, sure, I’ve no doubt that there are some of us out there who do fit the standard image of a “geek”. You know, single, long greasy hair, probably an unkempt patchy beard (with the remains of 3 day old biscuits and noodles still stuck in it), possibly thick glasses, spotty complexion, a waist band that is longer than the wearer is tall, uses computer code to talk to friends, and lives in parents loft/basement despite approaching 40y/o. Basically, Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons.
However, for me personally, and I’m sure for a large number of my fellow geeks out there, this image couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m early 30’s, married with 2 kids, live in my own home, I don’t speak fluent Klingon, I don’t have every episode of Big Bang Theory under my TV, my appearance is closer to that of a thug (shaven head, tattoos, goatee beard), and I’m more than happy to get my hands dirty by getting stuck in to any DIY or car repair jobs that need doing. But that all said, I still love my tech, my games, and my comics/movies. And I’m still extremely proud to declare that I am a geek.

Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo 2014

Hey Poppers

Well another year has come and gone and this years Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo 2014 was bigger, longer and packed with more media guest from TV and film. More artist, writers, creators from some of your favorite comics, web series and authors. Also a large group of independent comic book creators and artist. The venue also keeps expanding with a large tented area to hold more panels and events. Also there is a good chance you have to battle some weather conditions. This year a small snow storm. Hey that is spring in Alberta.  I spent the weekend walking the floor, seeing panels and talking to comic creators. Each year the amount of cosplayers continue to grow both with the amount of people coming out dressed up and creating amazing costumes. IMG_0801In the coming weeks I will be posting some the great work created by some really artistic people. Every aspect of the pop culture was represented at the show. Not only were your regular cosplayer making the rounds. Young and old came out to show their love for everything that revolves around the geek culture. IMG_0797Attending this year was three of the top cosplayer out there today. Lindsay Elyse, Monika Lee, Jessica Nigri. I got my picture with Monika Lee and I have to say is pleasant, fun and made everyone that came to see her feel very comfortable.

Among the media attending were Sean Astin(Lord of the Rings, Goonies, TMNT), Michael Beihn(Terminator, 24, The Rock), Bruce Campbell(Evil Dead, Burn Notice), Bill Paxton(Aliens, Agents of Shield, Big Love), Sigourney Weaver(Alien, Aliens, Avatar), Matt Smith(Doctor Who,Clone) and Karen Gillan(Doctor Who,Oculus,Guardians of the Galaxy. So many more to list but to find out more head over to my podcast, The Pop Culture Cafe’s Podcast.

From the world of comics J. Scott Campbell, Nick Bradshaw, Terry Dodson, Keven Eastman, Ray Fawkes, Mark McKenna. Again the show had many of the top name in comics both artists and writers. I had the pleasure of talking to Pat Shand from Zenescope Comics about the world of Grimm Fairy Tales and creating strong female leads. I had a great conversation with George Wassil about Oh Hell. George was excited about the world he help created and I am happy to help him spread the word. Go by and check out Kickstarter and help out if you love independent creators. Oh-Hell-1_CI had a small chat with Nick Bradshaw and what do two Canadian boys talk about first, not comics but the amount of snow each side of the country gets the most. Eh!

The Calgary Expo once again put on another great show. This is my 3rd year I have gone and the show gets bigger and better. Better organize and each day you can see how the people in charge make changes to make it run smoother. The volunteers deserve a great deal of thanks. These people spend long days making it pleasurable for us all. I did unfortunately see one poor girl getting harassed at our wait to get into the Doctor Who panel. I finally had to go over and tell the guy to leave her alone and if he wanted to complain go to the higher ups. That incident pissed me off. But overall the general public were great.

So much to see and do. That is the catch at such a big con, so much to see and no time to see it all. In my option that makes a great con. I took in the Greg Rucka panel that was such a great experience on writing not just for comics but anything at all. The Doctor Who panel was the high light of the whole con for me and the Corral was packed with some many coming to see their Doctor.

Finally two things that really made this years Calgary Expo really stand out. The first was talking to a guy from Calgary, I am from Edmonton and the two cities have a great and long rivalry. But for use it was just two guys that love the world of comics. The memories of our youth and the memories that were created because of that medium. The days of the old musky smell of the books. The simple joy of those books long ago and the chance to share that joy with someone like yourself, no matter where they come form.

The last and most important for me. I found a book that help create my love of comic books, Sci-Fi, and the world of fantasy. When I was a young fellow the book that I read again and again. That sparked my imagination, my love of art and my youthful dreams of living among the stars, Star-Lord by John Byrne, Terry Austin and Chris Claremont. I almost passed by this book. But I had to have it in what ever condition. I asked the seller if I could open it and take a look and he agreed. Opening the first page brought me back to happier times and smell of those old pages made my problems of my world disappear. Once again it was me and Star-Lord flying around the universe. Seeing that book again help me capture a very special and happier time for me.

So, Calgary Expo. Thank you. You help this old man feel like a young kid again.

Great show.
