GLOW Coming to Netflix In June

I remember when GLOW, The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling came out on TV. I was into wrestling at the time and being a young guy I had to check it out. At first it was interesting but slowly I lost interest and to be honest I don’t remember any of it. Is that going to stop me from watching GLOW, nah.

Women don’t sweat…they GLOW! Get in the ring and get ready to rumble because GLOW is coming to Netflix Friday, June 23.

About GLOW: Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.

GLOW is created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds). Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan and Tara Herrmann executive produce alongside Flahive and Mensch who are serving as showrunners.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Part 1?

pirates0003

This one seems more personal. Jack Sparrow may have pissed off the wrong guy this time around. I like that. Also seems they are going a bit darker which I also approve of. Seems to be a more focused conflict then the last time around.

I didn’t see Keira Knightley or Orlando Bloom in the trailer so guessing they are not in this one. It does state that is the “beginning of an adventure” so this may be a two parter. Great to see Geoffery Rush back either way. I’ll probably regret saying this but as of right now I’m looking forward to seeing this.

Holy Grails of the Comic world …….Prologue

silver-age

Every collector genre has their own holy grail, or grails. Those cards, albums, videogames etc  that instantly when you mention them, there is a universal glimmer of recognition. Had an experience like that just last night.

As many of you know, Wednesday is new comic book day. When we the faithful, head in   to see what wonders wait in store for us.Waiting until the weekend is insanity to us, weekend warriors be damned. A few of us had converged in the comics section(Both new and back issues) and were buzzing like school girls about the weeks events and what was to come.(Not one of us is under 40, and would look mostly terrible to pigtails….mostly).

Suddenly, the nefarious “Mr. L” who runs our Mecca of Marvels, our Dominion of DC, our Institution of Images, our Zenith of Zenescop—-well you get the idea. Anyway, he beckoned us over to see something on his hi- def 23 inch(maybe?) PC Monitor and there we stood ……our brains slowing wrapping around what we were seeing. Gathered like schoolboys at what was pixelated in front of us.

This was Nirvana. There on the screen before us was Avengers#1 thru 6 (1963), Daredevil #1,(1963), Amazing Spider-man(1963) and Amazing Fantasy #15(1962).These were REALLY nice looking books. You could see the minor chipping(very minor) and a few creases but these books had some of tightest spines I had seen in a long while…….I need a moment.

Okay, I’m back. We looked on in awe for a moment and then the questions began “Are those yours?”…..”Where did they come from?”……”Wow, really?”…..”No, a guy brought them in in a plastic bag”…….Yup folks. These gems showed up at the comic shop of my choice in a simple plastic bag. What followed was a pretty cool story you only hear about once every 5 years or so………

Wait a minute…………………………this is too long to type out l. Make you a deal(A mantra of dealers everywhere). John”Stoney” Burke on I are gonna chat about this on the podcast next Wednesday Mar.2nd(with commentary hopefully from “Mr.L”.) and then I’ll update this post to give an abbreviated version of what went on…. pop back …..or listen in….your call.

Some of the nicest spines…….ever.
