Writer: Matthew Rosenberg

Letterer: Travis Lanham
Matthew Rosenberg is a very, very good writer. Let’s get that out of the way right now in the beginning of this chat. This story flowed so smoothly I was almost surprised when I got to the last page of the book. This was more of a an introduction story, and NOT of the Kingpin It held my attention more than a story with 30 heroes in it that I read about 2 weeks ago(looking at you “Monster Unleashed”).There is something to be said for a “slow burn” in telling a good story.
Most comic readers have known for years that the Kingpin is a very complex character. The Netflix series “Daredevil” just added to that complexity with the brilliant acting of Vincent D’onofrio. From doting lover one minute, to violent sociopath the next, there is a lot of ground to cover…..and this book has started to do that really well.
I liked the art of Ben Torres also. It had kind of “noir” feel to it and the great use of shadows helped to give it a grittier feeling, and much more of a street feel even though the setting was anything but. The colors were kept darker which help set the slower paced tone of the story.
I’m putting this title on my pull list next week. I wasn’t sure what to expect but this issue exceeded expectations. Did I mention Matthew Rosenberg is an awesome writer?
I knew what I was getting into ……before I even got into it. Have you ever seen a trailer for a show, and you knew that there was no WAY this show was going to be a dud? You looked at the cast…….you looked at the writers……you looked at the thesis of the show, and just knew you were about to see nothing but quality?
That’s where my head was with “BILLIONS” before I saw it.This series delves into the uber dark world of wall street trading and the consequences faced by those left behind…….both in the money world and the legal world.
Starring Damian Lewis(Nicholas Brody- Homeland, for which he won an Emmy) and Paul Giamatti(John Adams- John Adams, A masterpiece of American political history)as the ying and yang of the business world. These two seem built specifically as the “frenemies” of each other. So much in common, yet so far apart ideologically. Rounding out the cast is Maggie Siff( Sons of Anarchy),Malin Maria Akerman(Silk Spectre2- Watchman),and David Costabile(Breaking Bad).
If you haven’t watched the first season you still have time as the second season does not start until Feb.19th.I believe it’s on Netflix or Showtime on demand.
Here’s the Season 2 Trailer
Reports are in that FOX might be okay with starting FIREFLY back up again. On one condition. Mr.Joss Whedon is involved. I’ve of two minds on this one.FOX could be just blowing smoke up everyone’s butts by suggesting that they would do it if Joss came back OR they may be extending an olive branch to see how far it grows out. I really hope it’s the latter.
Obviously a reboot would be missing a few characters. The late Ron Glass” Shepard” and DOA in the movie “Serentity”actor Alan Tudyk”Hoban Washburne”.Nathan Fillion and Alan are actually working on a web series right now called”Con Man” and I suspect if one was in, the other might join on also.
Gina Torres just did a stint on “Westworld” but I think her other engagements are relatively open and I would be surprised if she turned down the opportunity. I’m slowly talking myself into it folks.
